Engaging with Policy in the UK: Responding to Changes in Planning, Heritage and the Arts

The AHRC Heritage Priority Area and RESCUE: The British Archaeological Trust are organising a one day conference on ‘Engaging with Policy in the UK: Responding to Changes in Planning, Heritage and the Arts’ on Saturday the 27th October at UCL’s Institute of Archaeology.  This is one of a series of activities we are undertaking to draw together academics, civil servants, private and professional bodies, and civil society organisations to address challenges and uncertainty from changing policies.  We hope to connect researchers, practitioners and policy makers involved in the arts, culture, heritage and the natural/historic environment around key areas of shared concern.

The event is timely.  Many of us are aware of changes in the arts and heritage landscape that are directly impacting university departments, practitioners, contractors, employees, civil servants, and even civil society.  There are, however, opportunities to be involved in the future direction of these sectors.

There have been significant changes in the political landscape, and increasing numbers of consultations/calls for evidence. It is therefore also now timely to provide the relevant information/evidence or highlight key issues as we reshape policy as well as withdraw from the EU, in areas of concern such as how immigration policies will impact our sectors to whether the natural and historic environment is adequately protected in British Law, or how the arts, culture and heritage will be funded.

IHBC Scotland will host a CPD session (from 3.30 to 4.30) at the Listed Property Show in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms on 27 October, with free access to the day-long event for any IHBC members booking ahead.

The Listed Property Owners’ Club represents listed building owners from across Britain and is celebrating its 25th year in 2018. It actively campaigns on conservation issues.

Civic Voice Annual Conference 2018: Conservation/ Regeneration

Alongside co-sponsoring, the IHBC will host a stand and provide a lead speaker – IHBC Chair James Caird – as the IHBC once again joins Civic Voice’s national conference – this time helping answer ‘How we can balance conservation and regeneration’.

The Civic Voice team are working closely with Birmingham Civic Society in making sure this is a conference that makes a real difference – we don’t want you or your civic society to miss out – so book your place now and join groups including Blackpool, Bristol, Cockermouth and Retford who have already registered to attend.

The focus of the Conference will be on conservation and regeneration within our towns and cities and asking ‘how can we balance conservation and regeneration?’

It will build upon the Big Conservation Conversation as we make the case for the importance of conservation areas and the historic environment.

An afternoon with Dr. Charles Mynors

Dr Charles Mynors is a lawyer with specialist expertise in planning and ecclesiastical law. He is also a Fellow of the RTPI and the RICS, and a member of the IHBC. After almost ten years as a planning officer in local government, he practised for over 25 years as a barrister from chambers in the Temple. He now heads up a team in the Law Commission, simplifying planning law in Wales; the Commission’s consultation paper, published in November 2017, has been described as “surprisingly readable”.

He has written a number of books on his specialist areas, three of which (those on listed buildings, trees, and advertisements) have gone into subsequent editions; each has become the standard textbook in its field. He is an adviser to the Prince’s Regeneration Trust. He lectures widely, and is a Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University and regular lecturer at Bath University.

Charles’s latest book – “Listed Buildings and Other Heritage Assets” (published by Swet & Maxwell in September 2017), 5th edn written jointly with Nigel Hewitson – is a comprehensive guide to the increasingly complex law in this area. It is an indispensable guide for practitioners, lawyers and judges and many others; it covers all the new legislation, the NPPF, and over 100 new cases, and applies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
