S.S. Teulon (1812-73) tends to be known largely by reputation as one of the most wilful and idiosyncratic Victorian Goths – a reputation founded on a relatively short period in his career and then largely on his ecclesiastical work. Yet domestic architecture ranging from model workers\u2019 cottages to country houses accounts for
\na considerable part of his prolific output. Illustrated with photographs taken during the author\u2019s fieldwork, this lecture will provide an overview of a richly diverse group of buildings, presenting several that have been attributed for the first time. Edmund Harris is an independent
\narchitectural scholar with a special interest in Victorian architecture. He is the author of ‘The Rogue Goths’ published by the Victorian Society.<\/p>\n

This is a unique opportunity to visit this historic site, located on the former site of the Amberley chalk pits. The museum provides a centre where the industrial and social history in the south-east has been conserved and interpreted in an active working environment.<\/p>\n

The day will start at 10am with a curator\u2019s tour of the Museum and chalk pits site, and will be followed by a group networking picnic lunch at the site (BYO picnic). Partners, families and children are welcome. In the afternoon we have the opportunity of a site visit to the Scheduled Amberley Castle to view and hear about the ongoing works from Kevin Symonds of Traditional Stone. There is an optional opportunity for further networking at the Bridge pub at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

Explore the post-war 1950s modernist architecture in Bethnal Green featuring great buildings by Berthold Lubetkin and Denys Lasdun.<\/p>\n

We will look at The Greenways Estate, which includes flats by both Yorke Rosenberg & Mardall (1956-9) and Denys Lasdun – his two cluster blocks, Sulkin House, and Trevelyan House (1955-8) listed at Grade II.<\/p>\n

Across the road is the Cranbrook Estate (1955-65) by Skinner & Bailey (and Lubetkin), which features one of Elisabeth Frink\u2019s first public sculptures – the Blind Beggar and His Dog (1958) listed Grade II*.<\/p>\n

We will also visit: the LCC\u2019s Parkview Estate by De Metz & Birks (1950-3); and various other schemes by Donald Hamilton, Wakeford and Partners: Digby Estate (1968); Approach Road Estate (1951); Approach Estate (1962); Mayfield House (1962), and more.<\/p>\n

Thaddeus Zupan\u010di\u010d is a writer and photographer. His book London Estates: Modernist Council Housing received rave reviews.<\/p>\n
