World Heritage: Recording poverty and murder in 19th century Edinburgh (IHBC Recognised CPD Provider)","description":"<p>This talk is primarily on some of the recording methods used in 19th Century Edinburgh to capture life within the old town, from text to photography. This lecture focuses mainly on two, somewhat unusual methods of recording that were carried out for other purposes but which cast light (in one case literally) on the social conditions and the architecture of the Old Town.<\/p>\n<p>Between the 1820s and c.1930, the office of the city architect was used to record crime scenes in Edinburgh. Some of these, essentially CSI, drawings are so highly detailed and accurate that they provide an insight into a type of domestic architecture (mainly the lodging house) which normally doesn&#8217;t feature in architectural histories. When combined with other imagery, often of a more picturesque nature, we can identify exactly where some of these gruesome events took place and get an idea of the squalor and misery that often lay behind the quaint building frontages.<\/p>\n<p>Old Town slums were also seen as the perfect environment in which to carry out experiments in early flash photography as the interiors of these dark, dank places presented a challenge to the emerging technology; of course, they also produced images of great historical interest, highlighting the conditions some residents of the Capital&#8217;s Old Town endured. This lecture will also consider an example of this type of approach to the recording of Old Town life.<\/p>\n<p>About the Speaker:<br \/>\nJohn Lowrey has recently retired as senior lecturer in architectural history at the University of Edinburgh. He is widely published on Scottish architecture, with a particular emphasis on the architecture and urbanism of Edinburgh. He is now an honorary fellow of the university&#8217;s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, working with PhD students and on his own research.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 28 October (18:00 &#8211; font-weight: 400;\">Joint conference between the AHSS and the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of the architect David Bryce (1803 \u2013 1876). It will be held in one of Bryce\u2019s own buildings, the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, now the Edinburgh Futures Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"x-content-band-2\" class=\"x-content-band vc rowLtGrey padT padB man\">\n<div class=\"x-container max width wpb_row\">\n<div class=\"x-column x-sm vc x-1-2 colTxt\">\n<p>David Bryce was one of Scotland\u2019s most celebrated Victorian architects and a central figure in the creation of the distinctive Scots Baronial style popular in the 19th century.\u00a0 He is best known for the sprawling and turreted country houses he designed across Scotland, which masterfully combined picturesque effects with the modern comforts and planning of the Victorian home.<\/p>\n<p>In Edinburgh he contributed several notable buildings to the cityscape, including the Royal Infirmary, Fettes College and the Italianate Bank of Scotland on the Mound.<\/p>\n<p>This conference will showcase the latest research on Bryce\u2019s life and work, celebrating him as a key figure in the history of Scottish architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers will include Ralph St Clair Wade, author of a forthcoming volume on Bryce; Alex Bremner; Clarisse Godard-Desmarest; Ian Gow; and Aonghus Mackechnie.\u00a0 All are sure to bring fascinating insights into Bryce\u2019s career and the architectural world of 19th-century Scotland in which he worked.<\/p>\n<p>A drinks reception will be held in the evening, after the conference, at the Bank of Scotland on the Mound.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 16px;
