{"id":6674,"date":"2017-09-19T16:34:42","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T15:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbc.org.uk\/events\/?p=6674"},"modified":"2017-09-17T17:36:20","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T16:36:20","slug":"masonry-building-conservation-principles-and-techniques-p2-professional-level-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/events200826230.live-website.com\/?p=6674","title":{"rendered":"Masonry Building Conservation- Principles and Techniques P2-Professional Level 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>25 &#8211; 27 September 2017<a href=\"http:\/\/scotlime.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=84cd900131fc6300c92635cc3&amp;id=a3886ce3c5&amp;e=f5a0ee529e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nCharlestown Workshops, Fife<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a03 day workshop\u00a0is aimed at building professionals who have completed &#8216;P1 Traditional Masonry Repair&#8217; and\u00a0provides confidence in the repair principles, materials and techniques for traditional masonry buildings, covering mortar manufacture, practical repair methods and techniques, and aftercare of lime based materials through a programme of classroom and practical activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ox-1cbd2073ca-standfirst\">The course provides sufficient underpinning and practical knowledge of materials to enable effective development of specifications, supervision and snagging of the conservation works including repointing, stone indents, surface repair of stone, grouting, renders and harls and limewash.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Course Suitability<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Attendees must have completed \u2018P1 Introduction to Masonry Repairs in Traditional Buildings\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This course follows on from \u2018P1 Introduction to Masonry Repairs in Traditional Buildings\u2019 and is aimed at those who work with, own or are responsible for traditional buildings. Suitable for building and heritage professionals such as architects, surveyors or planners the course would also be of interest to homeowners, those responsible for maintenance works to buildings such as churches or those considering a renovation or conversion project.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Learning Outcomes:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding of building conservation philosophy and best practice;<\/li>\n<li>Development of repair strategies including consideration of their cost effectiveness;<\/li>\n<li>Understanding traditional mortars, how to specify and replicate them;<\/li>\n<li>Understanding advanced mortar manufacture;<\/li>\n<li>Ability to understand considerations in relation to matching and specifying natural stone replacements;<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of conditions where specification of surface repair of stone is suitable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Course Programme<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Day 1 &#8211; Conservation Principles, Advanced Lime Technology and Science<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Health &amp; Safety;<\/li>\n<li>Condition survey and recording of masonry;<\/li>\n<li>Setting characteristics, pore structure and permeability issues of mortars;<\/li>\n<li>Materials for repairs including sampling and analysis of mortars;<\/li>\n<li>Gauged mixes, \u2018hot\u2019 lime mixes and gauged \u2018hot\u2019 lime mixes;<\/li>\n<li>Specification and manufacture assessment process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Day 2 &#8211; Principles and Techniques for Masonry Conservation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtrusive tile\/stone repairs and stitching techniques;<\/li>\n<li>Surface repairs to ashlar and profiled stone;<\/li>\n<li>Renders &amp; Harls &#8211; Suction bonds, designing mortars and application of base coats;<\/li>\n<li>Repointing ashlar masonry\u2022Second coats for mortar repairs;<\/li>\n<li>Natural stone replacement including full and partial indents;<\/li>\n<li>Manufacture of grouts and methods of grouting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Day 3 &#8211; Principles and Techniques for Masonry Conservation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Advanced surface repairs of stone including final coat mortars and replicating tooled surfaces;<\/li>\n<li>Materials for consolidating delaminating stone;<\/li>\n<li>Render &amp;
