The IHBC is delighted to host a stand as we help the council and local communities celebrate the 50th anniversary of Conservation Areas on Wednesday 27th February, at The Guildhall as Cambridge city centre looks back to its designation back in 1969.
Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Joint Director, Stephen Kelly invites you to please join us to look back over that time – and forward in the context of Cambridge’ growth, with the help of displays and presentations including:
Hear about recent archaeological work in Cambridge from the County Archaeologist. Get Historic England’s perspective from the outgoing Regional Director and from Duncan Wilson, the Chief Executive. Take the opportunity to hear from Civic Voice, Executive Director – Ian Harvey and the Historic Towns & Villages Forum’s Chair – Steven Bee about the continuing importance of conservation areas.
1-5pm open to all – stalls/displays/talks and, 6pm by invitation – informal reception. Speakers, panel, drinks, buffet.

The IHBC will host its regular stand at the Natural Stone Show’s Conservation Area in April, in London’s ExCel, so please be sure to visit us there, and remember that this busy event also offers lots of free IHBC-recognised CPD including the regular Conservation Day, on Thursday 2 May.
The Natural Stone Show’s Conservation Area provides free advice, enlightening case studies and a forum for the exchange of information experience and opinions, helping you select the correct stone for building repair. Stone is an important part of the £3.6 billion conservation sector and has a thriving community of specialists committed to safeguarding the UK’s built heritage. This is represented at the show through a dedicated conservation area coordinated by Historic England and English Stone Forum, together with partner organisations including the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) and Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
Conservation Conference
Historic England and the English Stone Forum will oversee day three of the Natural Stone & Building Conservation Conference.
The free to attend Conservation Day takes place on Thursday 2 May 2019 with seminars addressing the selection and sourcing of stone for conservation projects. The Conservation Day is fully CPD-accredited by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). Seminars include:
The morning session, hosted by the English Stone Forum and chaired by Dr Tim Yates, considers the issues of material selection and appropriate skills for repairing England’s stone heritage.
In the afternoon, Historic England offers a selection of updates of current conservation research, chaired by Chris Wood.

Join the IHBC London Branch for this not to be missed opportunity to hear from Christa Masters of HM Planning Inspectorate, David McDonald of IHBC & Henrietta Billings of SAVE.
The Planning Inspectorate
PINS deals with planning appeals, national infrastructure planning applications, examinations of local plans and other planning-related and specialist casework in England and Wales. Christa will review some recent appeal decisions on the interpretation of legislation and policy relating to the conservation of historic structures and sites, as well as best practice to help Inspectors on heritage cases (covering content and presentation of cases).
Modernising the IHBC
David McDonald, IHBC President will introduce plans to review the IHBC’s governance. Since its inception over twenty years ago, the Institute’s constitution has not been changed. It has been recognised that it has some inherent weaknesses with regards to a number of issues including the requirements of the Charities Commission, the ability to act internationally and possible working towards chartership status. This will be an opportunity for London Members to hear more about governance and comment on how the IHBC can take it forward into the future.
SAVE
Henrietta Billings, Director of SAVE Britain’s Heritage will talk about the organisation’s work and campaigns with particular reference to its role in appeals.
