Broadwater Farm was built for ‘communities’ and was a minor triumph of Modernist, state-built housing, but within 15 years of taking in its first tenant the estate was in flames. Its architecture, together with its communities, were condemned as a malign presence, alien and unwelcome amongst the familiar order of the surrounding Victorian terraces.
