The Eighth Annual Cambridge Conference of the Historic Interiors Section of ICON will continue the section’s chronological survey of historic interiors through the centuries by focusing on the Great Exhibition of 1851 held at the Crystal Palace in London.

The Great Exhibition was the first international exhibition of manufactured products and was enormously influential not only in technology but also in the decorative arts and design. We will be considering not only the engineering feat of constructing the Crystal Palace and how it influenced building in general but also advances in textile manufacture, the rising interest in taxidermy as well as impact of exotic materials from the colonies and the role conservation has in making historic interiors. more….
