IHBC South East Branch: Dealing with Rubbers: Repairing an early 18th century gauged brickwork façade

A rare and unique opportunity to view at close hand ongoing sensitive brickwork repairs, including the entire rebuilding of the parapet and cornice being undertaken as part of extensive repair works taking place to the façade of Farnham Museum (aka Wilmer House) a Grade I listed building, dating to 1718, built for local hop merchant John Thorne and now owned by Waverley Borough Council. The entire frontage of the building is constructed in rubbed brick and was described by architectural historian Nathanial Lloyd “perhaps the most beautiful example extant of the Doric order interpreted in brick.” There are some good sections of panelling internally as part of the museum which has a slightly unusual plan form.
