Due to the economic crisis in our digitized world, we see a high vacancy rate of 1950-70s commercial buildings, some of which may be regarded as cultural assets at the same time. Key to their conservation and continued (re-)use is the issue of climate control that is inseparably linked to the repair and upgrading of their emblematic ‘light’ façades and the challenges we face in terms of sustainability. Various approaches can be distinguished to find a balanced solution, as will be illustrated with the case of the obsolete 1959 Social Insurance Office block in Amsterdam.
